SUPPORTING TASMANIAS ENERGY TRANSITION
The Nook BESS is strategically located within the North West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), one of three priority REZs identified by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) as part of its Integrated System Plan.
This site was selected for its ability to enhance Tasmania’s renewable energy ambitions. The battery is expected to support the Tasmanian Government’s legislated Renewable Energy Target, aiming to reach 200% renewable generation (based on 2022 levels) in the coming years. Positioned within a nationally strategic REZ, the project is well-placed to contribute to this transition.
LEADING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY
The Nook BESS will be a grid-scale battery connected to the National Electricity Market (NEM) via the existing transmission network.
At this stage, no final decision has been made on which battery technology will be deployed. However, the project team is assessing several market-leading options to ensure safety, performance, and environmental suitability.
Regardless of the final selection, the Nook BESS will enhance grid stability by dispatching stored energy during periods of peak demand and by providing rapid-response support during network disturbances.
